Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.'s presence in the Evanston-Northshore communities (North Cook County) dates back to the mid-1980s when the Iota Nu Sigma chapter was chartered. The Iota Nu Sigma Chapter relocated to Chicago in 2000, and the North Cook County area lacked a permanent chapter of Phi Beta Sigma. In early 2020, Bro. Kevin Davis, then Illinois State Director Bro. Dr. Arthur Davis, then Great Lakes Regional Director Bro. David Turner proposed re-establishing a chapter in the North Cook County area, but the plans were delayed as the country faced the COVID-19 pandemic. Talks resumed in late 2023 with the support of Great Lakes Regional Director Bro. Charles Jones and Bro. Dr. Rafael Matos.

On March 8, 2024, the general board of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. granted the charter for the Upsilon Nu Sigma Chapter to be established. The charter members of the Upsilon Nu Sigma Chapter are Bro. Kevin Davis (‘02 Xi Beta Sigma), Bro. Tyrone Dobson (‘12 Kappa Chi), Bro. Dr. Rafael Matos (‘99 Alpha Upsilon), Bro. Marc Presley (‘19 Eta Alpha Sigma), Bro. Charles Whitaker (‘85 Iota Nu Sigma) and Bro. Raymond Wise (‘10 Rho Beta).

The inaugural executive board: President, Bro. Dr. Rafael Matos; 1st Vice-President, Bro. Kevin Davis; 2nd Vice-President, Bro. Charles Whitaker; Treasurer, Bro. Tyrone Dobson; and Secretary, Bro. Raymond Wise.

The chapter’s first initiation was held on its one-year anniversary on March 8, 2025, on the campus of Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. Bro. Jamar Beyonu, Bro. Kameron Marshbanks, and Bro. Greg Miller were members of the inaugural class.

The chapter is committed to serving brothers and communities north of I-290, east of I-294, and south of Lake-Cook Road in North Cook County, Illinois.
